Updates on the SDG Negotiations (VIDEO)

The Global Alliance on Health and Pollution was recently at the U.N. at the first meeting of the Inter-agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goal Indicators (IAEG-SDGs). We were there to urge the strengthening of an indicator for Target 3.9 and adopt language proposed by UNEP.

Until the global community confirms the SDGs this fall, the GAHP will be working to ensure that toxic pollution is sufficiently addressed in the negotiations leading up to the final framework, filling in areas that the preceding Millennium Development Goals failed to cover.

Why is this crucial?

As reported in Humanosphere, Pure Earth’s head of research, Dr. Jack Caravanos, described how pollution is wreaking havoc on the health of communities around the world, and why fighting pollution is crucial to addressing poverty. He spoke about this at a recent seminar at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) on May 27 entitled “Identifying toxic waste sites and quantifying their global burden of disease in low- and middle-income countries.”

Here are some other highlights of our outreach efforts to shape the SDGs.
