Partner: Environmental Defense Fund (EDF)
“We create transformational solutions to the most serious environmental problems.”
Why did your organization decide to support the Commission on Pollution and Health?
Environmental Pollution is a leading cause of mortality and loss of prosperity around the world. The Global Commission on Health and Pollution is a critical partnership to address some of the most difficult challenges in mitigating environmental exposures and improving public health.
What impact will the work of the Commission have?
The Commission’s impact will be to define the scope and magnitude of specific environmental health threats, analyze data to inform action, and catalyze collaborations and partnerships to find solutions.
How can we overcome obstacles to progress in the fight against pollution?
A significant obstacle in mitigating environmental threats is lack of high quality data and overcoming political and social pressures. In my lifetime, I’d like to see a world where communities are empowered to make changes that improve their own personal health and prosperity.
Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), a leading international nonprofit organization, links science, economics, law, and innovative partnerships to create transformational solutions to the most serious environmental problems. Our mission is to preserve the natural systems on which all life depends.
EDF is dedicated to protecting the environmental rights of all people, including future generations. Among these rights are access to clean air and water, healthy and nourishing food, and flourishing ecosystems. Guided by science, EDF evaluates environmental problems and creates and advocates for solutions that win lasting political, economic and social support because they are nonpartisan, cost-efficient and fair.
We address today’s most urgent environmental challenges by targeting issues that affect people around the world. Working in partnership with others, we focus where we’re best positioned to help, based on our strengths.
The Commission on Pollution and Health is an initiative of The Lancet, the Global Alliance on Health and Pollution (GAHP), and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Commissioners include many of the world’s leading researchers and practitioners in the fields of pollution management, environmental health and sustainable development.
